Week One (literary feature hunt) -Alice

Irony

Pg. 41

The very first panel of this page demonstrates dramatic irony, because the narration on the top states that the Shah "actually did try: he tested a dozen prime ministers", although the picture shows the Shah rejecting every candidate for unrealistic reasons, such as their physique. This panel implies that the Shah just looked as though he was trying to please his people, when in reality, he didn't want to let go of his power as a dictator.

  1. I don't know if this is irony, but possibly if in relation to life in Iran. For example, it may be ironic that the Shah rejects the candidates for their physical appearance, and for women, they have to hide theirs. This panal shows the extreme dictatorship of the Shah, to the point where he can decide based on physical rather than mental capabilities. This reminded me of something Gabe was telling me the other day. It was about a dictator or head of government I believe in Russia (?) that would not step down from his power. He also got voted out by the people.
