Week One (Snippet)-Alice

The background of most of the panels that uncle Anoosh appears in is black. This infers to his troubled and agonizing past, and also foreshadows his future; his exile and ultimately, death. Although he was pleasant and always smiling, deep inside, he wass probably badly injured and lonely. The black background refers to the state of his mind. Black is not a colour, but the absense of colour. He has no hope to light up his life: his life seems to be bleak and irreparable. It has a connection to some techniques used in movies; since both a graphic novel and a movie are visual, it has many of the same elements. In a movie, when a character is in despair, the screen sometimes turns black and white, and colours only illuminate a small portion of the screen, which are the important factors. Since Persepolis is entirely in black and white, the author uses this technique in a modified way--by painting the background black, the objects in the panel are automatically highlighted.
