Week SIX! [snippit] FION

In page 304, Satropi tries to tell the reality that was happening in Iran: although people are are under strict laws which restrict them to do many things, for example partying and putting on make up, people still do it on their own time. "Are the laws effective?" this may be a question that Satropi wants to ask us.

As you can see, the majority of this panel depicts the real life of the people while only a portion of it shows the official representation of Iran. This signifies the majority of these people actually enjoys freedom, as a matter of fact, only the minority obeys to the strict freedom-less rules under theocracy. Also the photo of the official representation of Iran is in front of the partying atmosphere background, seems like it's telling us that these laws are very superficial just like the photo is(in the surface). Underneath the photo, there are many people who enjoys themselves and to do what is against to the laws. So, are the laws effective? Seems like a no. The more extreme the laws get, the more the people go against it.

  1. I totally agree with you Fion. I don’t think that anyone is obeying the rules either. I like how you thought of the idea about how more extreme laws, get more people to rebel against it.

  2. Such a good idea! We (Ms. Brownrigg and I) saw the same concept concerning mass rebellion and sub-culture as a key motif of the comic. Maybe harsher laws create rebellion? Does it happen in other societies or times? I wonder... What about Canadian Potlatch ceremonies? Having been banned by the Canadian federal government in 1885, the traditional and culturally vital ceremony continued, nonetheless. So what dies this mean? Sure, all societies have rebels, but perhaps more interesting concerning our unit question is Marjane Satrapi's arguably "rebellious" choice of comics as her medium. So, once again, the Medium is the Message. :)

  4. The question if laws are effective could really connect to the current issues in China. They are only allowed to have one child, however, many pay their way into having two or more. Clearly, that is an example of laws being broken by their own governments! In Canada, drugs are illegal, but every year on April 20th that entire day is devoted to drugs! Not only does this question if laws are effective, but do they also promote hypocratic acts?
